ORBIS International (www.orbis.org), prevents and treats blindness by providing the tools and training and technology to local partners to help them develop workable and sustainable solutions to the tragedy of avoidable blindness. ORBIS’ iconic Flying Eye Hospital, flown by volunteer airline pilots, is the world’s only airborne ophthalmic training and surgical facility and is the focal point for educational programs and advocacy. Together with hospital-based training programs, ORBIS and its cadre of over 450 volunteer faculty, typically train thousands of doctors and nurses and other healthcare professionals every year, and perform more than 100,000 eye surgeries. ORBIS’ Cyber-Sight tele-medicine initiative connects doctors throughout the world with ORBIS volunteer ophthalmologists for professional mentoring and real-time consultation on patient cases.
