Children's Aid Society (childrensaidsociety.org), in New York City, is one of the oldest and largest social services agencies in the United States, founded in 1853 originally to address the epidemic of abandoned children in the streets of the City. CAS has a long and interesting a history of innovation in response to pressing social problems, changing with the times as the needs of poor children and their families have changed. CAS describes its mission as filling the gap between what poor children have, and what they need to thrive. CAS’ activities currently include pre-natal counseling and assistance, early childhood programs, the celebrated Community Schools programs, adoption and foster care, adolescent pregnancy prevention, health care and counseling, preventative services, legal advocacy, and juvenile justice.
